Christianity Crumbles?

I am sure by now that you have heard the news about the Gosel of Judas, how it tells the true story of what happened between Jesus, Judas, and the rest of the disciples. What really disturbs me about all of this is that it is nothing more than sensationalism. Scholars readily agree that the document was written in the middle of the second century, long after Jesus and Judas both lived. To read a copy of this letter go to the National Geographic site and you can read it and also other things related to it.

It amazes me that when something like this appears all honest scholarship is tossed out the window and replaced by sensationalism and historical revisionism. The desire to be honest and responsible with the facts that are present and available are no longer seen fit, rather it becomes what will sell and make money. This letter is a forgery. It is someone writing as if he was Judas or someone else present at the time of Judas' life. My Greek Prof. and I were discussing this very issue, and I would agree with him that if this were something that happened in modern times (i.e. someone writing as if he was some else) there would be criminal charges brought against the person.

  1. From the New York Times article on The Gospel of Judas, the revolutionary new discovery apparently reveals three things:

    (1) There were various sects related to Christianity by 200-300 A.D., including the Gnostic beliefs shown in this new document.
    (2) Judas’ betrayal could possibly have been a part of God’s plan.
    (3) Judas was carrying out a secret command of Jesus which made him the greatest of all the disciples.

The first has been a common historical fact and does nothing to undermine Christianity.
The second is readily acknowledged by most Christians.
The third assumes that one deviating manuscript somehow topples thousands of others written earlier.

The only thing this discovery is powerful enough to do is to reinforce the vague, uninformed popular opinion that Christianity has somehow and at some time in the past been clearly disproven.

  2. I just finished watching NGC’s presentation…very interesting, and I found it amusing that Elaine Pagels claims even though that codex was written in the 2nd century, we can’t really know when the “original” document was written.

Most of these points are not new.

As far as point 1. this merely means that people were understanding it differently and not that they were clashing against each other.

    2. If Jesus was not crucified he would not have died for our sins (thus old news)

    3. I see it more to the fact that he was the most religious of all the deciples and thus more vulnrable to attacks from the devil and when he reilised the asault the devil made on him he commited suicide. the fact that he was the most religios might mean he was told more about heaven than any other human ever. This could be Interprited as a command by all that cannot understand the reality until we become as spiritual as Judas was at that point.

In the end I see this just as more Proof on the autinticity of the bible and all those that accept this is true only to attack the bible actully admit that Jesus exist and thus that Christianity is validated.
